is funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR.) It is involved in providing culturally sensitive support to a health and disability community assessment research survey currently being conducted among four Native American Tribes: The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation (MPTN); the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation (EPTN) and the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation (STN) of Connecticut, and the Narragansett Indian Tribe (NIT) of Rhode Island.
The project provides training and guidance for those Tribal members selected by each Tribe to become Research Technicians who perform the crucial task of data collection within their Tribe. The data from each Tribe will then become the property of that Tribe, providing them with vital information on their respective Tribal members' health and incidents of disability so appropriate federal and state grants can be applied for by the Tribes to provide their members with needed health and disability services and/or preventive care programs.
